What are the forces of cohesion?

You may wonder what are the forces of cohesion, what are we referring to or what is their function, since these are the intermolecular forces of attraction that hold some molecules together with others. Depending on the intensity of the cohesive forces, a substance is in a solid, liquid or gaseous state.

This property is related to the shape and structure of the molecules of each substance. An important characteristic of the cohesive forces is that they decrease rapidly with increasing distance. Then, the forces of attraction that occur between the molecules of the same substance are called cohesive forces.

It can be said that cohesion is the property that keeps the solid body preserved in its shape, and strong to resist pressures or applications of external forces. For example, in ice, cohesion is produced by the decrease in temperature that hardens and binds the water molecules, turning them into a solid.
