Sleep can boost creativity!
The best results that we could expect from a scientific study is that they indicate or recommend sleep, do not get excited, they are not long days but those called “power naps”. While sleep duration is certainly important, it’s not the only part of the equation. Light sleep can help our problem-solving abilities, according to a new study. This suggests that this period of sleep is essential to boost creativity.
The ability to think creatively is paramount to facing new challenges, but how creativity arises remains a mystery. The study found that brain activity common to the twilight zone between sleep and wakefulness (stage 1 or N1 non-rapid eye movement sleep) ignites creative sparks.
It is important to think about the quality of sleep and if the time spent sleeping is really restful. Progressing smoothly multiple times through the sleep cycle, made up of four separate sleep stages, is a vital part of getting truly high-quality rest. Each stage of sleep plays a role in allowing the mind and body to wake up refreshed. Understanding the sleep cycle also helps explain how certain sleep disorders, including insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea, can affect a person’s sleep and health.
Sleep stages:
- This is essentially the “falling asleep” stage, and typically lasts from one to five minutes.
- The body enters a more subdued state that includes a drop in temperature, relaxed muscles, and slower breathing and heart rate. It lasts from 10 to 60 minutes.
- It is also known as deep sleep and it is more difficult to wake someone up if they are in this phase. Muscle tone, pulse rate, and respiratory rate decrease in sleep as the body relaxes further. It lasts from 20 to 40 minutes.
- REM sleep first occurs about 90 minutes after falling asleep. The eyes move quickly from side to side behind the closed eyelids. It lasts from 10 to 60 minutes.
No more words, go to sleep!
