Europa, Jupiter’s moon that stores carbon on its surface

Until now, we knew that underneath its ice cap was hidden a salty ocean, but the big question was: would there be enough carbon for life? Well, scientists have made a jaw-dropping discovery! Using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (yes, the one with which we see beyond the stars), they found carbon dioxide on Europa and the most exciting thing is that this carbon appears to be indigenous, that is, it formed right there under the ice.

So, finding carbon on Europa is like discovering a cheese pizza in the middle of space, a sign that life could be on its way! Samantha Trumbo of Cornell University summed it up nicely, “Carbon is a biologically essential element.” In other words, it is the icing on the cake for any way of life that is trying to take root in Europe.

But here comes the most intriguing part, the carbon dioxide is found in a region called Tara Regio, where the ice surface seems to have been a cosmic battlefield, with exchange of materials between the subsurface ocean and the icy surface. NASA has big plans to solve this mystery, in 2024, they will launch the Europa Clipper spacecraft, which will do a lot of flybys near Europa to further investigate if this moon has the right conditions for life. We’re talking about a kind of space CSI, but instead of crimes, we’re looking for life!
